Xeomin® Vs. Botox®: Understanding Your Options
At Chapter Aesthetic Studio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, we offer both Botox® and Xeomin® injections. These treatments are made with the same base ingredient and offer similar benefits. So, is one better than the other?
Botox® and Xeomin® are both terrific at reducing wrinkles and helping skin look more smooth and youthful. However, there are a few key differences between the two products, regarding both ingredients and performance. In the sections below, we’ll uncover the differences to help you make an informed decision between Botox® and Xeomin®.
How Botox® and Xeomin® Work to Reduce Wrinkles
Botox® and Xeomin® are both FDA-approved brand names for injections of botulinum toxin. Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxic protein produced by bacteria. When injected into the skin, this substance blocks certain nerve signals from reaching the muscles around the injection site. This reduces muscle contraction in the area, which in turn has the effect of smoothing out wrinkles.
Botulinum toxin has various medical uses, thanks to its muscle-relaxing effect. These include the treatment of migraines, neck spasms, eye twitches, and even certain bladder conditions.
Most often, botulinum toxin is delivered in the form of Botox® or Xeomin® to reduce wrinkles and restore smooth, youthful skin. In recent years, these products have become incredibly popular, and it’s easy to see why: they’re effective, affordable, and cause minimal side effects.
Botox® and Xeomin® are sometimes injected throughout the body for various purposes. However, these products are most often administered to the face. In particular, the most commonly used injection zones are crow’s feet (outer eyes), the forehead and the area between the eyebrows (“11s” wrinkles).
Botox® Vs. Xeomin®: Active Ingredients
Botox® and Xeomin® both contain a purified form of botulinum toxin. This protein is derived from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. This is the key active ingredient that enables both of these products to effectively treat fine lines and wrinkles.
The formulation difference between Botox® and Xeomin® involves the precise form of the active ingredient. Botox® uses onabotulinum toxin A, while Xeomin® uses incobotulinum toxin A. (Don’t worry, you don’t have to memorize those names, and we won’t use them again!)
Botox®’s form of this ingredient includes extra proteins that protect and preserve the active molecules. In Xeomin®, on the other hand, the active ingredient occurs in a pure form, with no extra preservative proteins.
Botox® Vs. Xeomin®: Performance Differences
First of all, it’s important to note that both Botox® and Xeomin® are proven winners. You can expect great results from either product. However, there do seem to be a few noteworthy performance differences between the two.
First, the extra proteins in Botox® cause the body to produce antibodies. As a result, you can build up resistance over time to Botox®. Therefore, it’s possible that Botox® could become less effective if used many times. However, this effect seems rare, especially for individuals who don’t receive an excessive amount of treatment.
Second, Xeomin® seems to be faster-acting. As a pure form of botulinum toxin, Xeomin® takes effect quickly and may begin to show results within a few days. Meanwhile, the body requires more time to break down the extra proteins contained in a Botox® injection. Botox® typically shows results within 7–14 days of treatment.
Once results begin to show, both Botox® and Xeomin® provide around three or four months of benefits.
Some healthcare professionals believe that Xeomin® may provide longer-lasting results, closer to six months. However, there haven’t yet been many thorough studies comparing the effects of these two treatments. What we know for sure at this time is that both Botox® and Xeomin® provide excellent benefits in reducing wrinkles.
