Everything You Need to Know About Microneedling in New Hartford
When it comes to skincare, the most helpful treatments aren’t always the ones that use the fanciest products or the most complex procedures (we’re all about getting the most bang for your buck!). Sometimes, your body just needs a helpful nudge to put its own natural healing processes into action.
Such is the case with microneedling, an innovative treatment that leans on the body’s natural wound response system.
Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that offers amazing results. This quick and easy treatment helps reduce the appearance of scars and wrinkles while promoting a smooth, youthful skin quality.
What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a skincare treatment performed with very thin needles. Tiny holes, or channels, are made on the surface of the skin. These holes function as “micro-injuries” that stimulate the body’s natural wound-response mechanisms.
As the skin reacts to the presence of small needle wounds, it begins to produce more elastin and collagen around the treatment area.
These natural proteins promote healing and help restore smooth, firm skin. The channels created by microneedling also create space for restorative serums and creams to more effectively enter deeper layers of the skin.
Microneedling can be performed throughout the body and is sometimes used to treat certain medical conditions, such as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and alopecia areata (an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss). In most cases, microneedling is sought for skincare benefits and administered on the face or the neck.
Who Is Microneedling Right For?
Microneedling is an effective treatment for a variety of skin care concerns. These include:
- Acne and acne scars
- Non-acne scars
- Wrinkles
- Skin firmness, smoothness, and texture
- Large pores
- Sun damage
- Hyperpigmentation (dark spots)
- Stretch marks
To address any of these conditions and more, microneedling stimulates a helpful wound response on the surface of the skin. Increased blood flow promotes healing while collagen and elastin fill in the wound, leaving behind healthier skin than before.
Microneedling Treatment in a Med Spa: What to Expect
Preparing for Microneedling: Things to Avoid Before Your Appointment
When you receive microneedling at Chapter Aesthetic Studio, you’ll enjoy clinically proven results and expert treatment—all in the comfort of a cozy med spa setting.
In the days prior to a microneedling appointment, it’s advisable to avoid direct sun exposure. There are also some products and medications that should be avoided. These include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and acne medications such as Accutane which contain the active ingredient isotretinoin.
Additionally, hair removal methods that cause sensitive skin, such as waxing, should be avoided before microneedling.
Microneedling Sessions: Planning Your Treatment
If you come to Chapter Aesthetic Studio for microneedling, you’ll be treated by a trained and licensed professional using a SkinPen®. This handheld device is moved across the surface of the skin, making tiny vertical holes in the treatment area. If desired, your microneedling session may be combined with other procedures, such as a chemical peel, for optimal results.
A typical course of treatment consists of between three and six appointments, spaced four to six weeks apart. Each microneedling session takes 30–60 minutes.
Microneedling Concerns: Is it Painful? Are there Side Effects?
Like any experience with needles, microneedling causes some pain. However, the needles are very small and the punctures are shallow. Therefore, microneedling is typically much less painful than other needle experiences, such as drawing blood for testing or donating. Most patients don’t notice more than a light stinging or prickling sensation.
Aside from a bit of pain during treatment, side effects are minimal. Some patients experience temporary skin effects on the treatment area, such as light swelling, redness, or flaking.
After treatment, it’s best to avoid direct sun exposure for a few days. It’s also helpful to avoid wearing makeup for 24 hours after a microneedling session.
